Path to Self-Love

I have been in a funk lately, and let me tell you why. A year and a half ago I decided to open my own business called Healing Alma. Alma means “soul” in Portuguese, my native language from Brazil. I am an intuitive energy healer. My energy healing is different than other modalities because I combine all the techniques I have learned (reiki, theta healing, psychic training, and therapy of the soul) into my own thing — I should eventually give it a name.

When I started my business in March of 2018 things were pretty good. I set intentions to grow my clientele monthly and I was really manifesting my creations. I got better and better every time I worked with clients, my clients seemed to really like my work, and I felt I was really on the right track to achieve my biggest dream, which is opening a healing center in a few years. There was only one thing that bothered me. I had a huge desire to know and do more for my clients because energy work is amazing to let go of our past emotional memories and balance our energy centers but it does nothing about future goals and creating a life you absolutely love. I felt this was also an important piece in the healing process for the person, the community, and the planet because, if we love the life we have, I believe we can spread this love and joy to the world.

So I embarked last year on a course to become a life coach. I absolutely love the program I was trained in — the Dream Building program with Life Mastery Institute — because it is designed to help people reconnect with their passions and dreams to create a life they love. I invested a big chunk of our family savings into being a life coach, and I thought I was going to get my returns back and help tons of people to create their dreams almost immediately. So the plan was: 1) Pay my family back, 2) Help lots of people to create a life of their dreams, 3) Create the life of my dreams, 4) Raise the energy of the planet, and 5) Save the planet!!! Boom. I solved the world crises! lol

Well, things didn’t turn out as I expected. As I shifted my energy into being a coach my business started to slow down. Eventually I lost 90% of my energy healing clients, and I was not enrolling anyone into my coaching program. The feelings of frustration, sadness, and helplessness were all around me, and I just wanted to feel good again!! I then started taking a closer look at my life and remembering moments when I felt derailed. Everytime I would take a path in my life and feel completely stuck, I would then change directions and opportunities and resources would start appearing so my path would open up again. So, I decided to put my energy back into energy healing work and all of the sudden new clients started to show up again.

To be honest, I am not quite sure why I decided to drop the energy work since I love it so dearly. I felt it was time to take a new direction in my career path, but I was trying to deny a part of me that is so deep and present in my life. I’ve been a scientist for more than 20 years, and I think the idea of having a more logical business like coaching seemed more appealing to my logical mind. The thing is, I have a gift when it comes to intuitive energy healing and I was trying to forget about this gift. But life would not allow me to forget it, and I am grateful that it didn’t. This is who I am and I am now embracing it with all my heart. I still love the coaching program I was trained in, and I will find a way to incorporate it into my energy healing work. For the moment, though, I am enjoying getting back to the magic that happens when I touch someone’s heart with my energy work.



Chocolate Sweet Potato Donut Recipe


After I was diagnosed with endometriosis in 2010 and struggled with severe pain for many years, I decided I needed to take my health back into my own hands. No more pain killers or hospital visits! I then went online and starting searching for alternative ways to treat endometriosis. I found and bought a book called Recipes and Diet Advice for Endometriosis by Carolyn Levett, and I started following her advice. I had to cut gluten, dairy, coffee, soy, red meat, and alcohol. I tried a diet similar to that in the past, but it did not work for me. I was so determined this time around to be pain free that I followed this diet to the last detail, and a month later I was pain free! I was sold! Since then, I have been eating a gluten free diet, mostly dairy free (although I love my goat cheese), occasionally some coffee, no soy, and only very rarely will I try some friend’s recipes with red meat. With this diet I have been able to manage my pain incredibly well. So, I am always looking for some delicious gluten free recipes to enjoy with family and friends! I adapted this recipe from Kaylie Johnson. Enjoy!


  • One large sweet potato (I like the jewel variety)
  • Two eggs
  • Three tbsp arrow root
  • Three tbsp coconut flour
  • Two tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tbsp baking soda
  • Two tbsp grounded flax seeds


  • 1/3 cup 85% cacao dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp honey


  • Peel and cut the sweet potato in squares, add to the food processor and blend it. Add all the other ingredients to the food processor and finish blending. Grease a donut pan with coconut oil and and start placing the dough on the tin. I usually use a spoon to place the dough into the donut pan (a bit tedious but totally worth the effort!), but use a piping bag if you have one.  Fill your donut pans generously to give your donuts a better shape. This recipe usually makes 10 donuts depending on the size of the sweet potato. Place the donut pans in the oven at 350F for 22min. After they are finished cooking, let them cool for at least 20min before trying to take the donuts out of the pan.
  • For the frosting, put 1/3 cup of dark chocolate chips in a double boiler, 1 tbsp coconut oil and 1 tbsp honey. Let it melt to then cover the donuts.


Nutrition Education

What we feed our bodies is essential to our well being. Each person has a unique genetic set up and life experiences (how much stress one has dealt with) that contributes to their nutritional tolerance. Our individuality is very important when it comes to feeding our bodies because a food that is potentially detrimental to one person might be healing for another one. Some foods can be potentially allergenic to many people like gluten, dairy, eggs, sugar, and some nuts. But some people can be very particular in that their bodies do not accept grains anymore (me!) while others thrive on a grain diet. To discover our unique nutritional needs and tolerances the body needs to go through a period of elimination and detoxification of the most common allergenic foods. When we eliminate a particular food from our diet from three to four weeks, after this period, if this particular food is problematic for the body, the body will react negatively to it.  I did this type of elimination with many foods because of health issues. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease in 2017 and I have discovered that my body does not tolerate most grains, dairy, red meat, and sugary sweets. I do not follow any specific diet, I like to listen to what my body needs and enjoys eating by paying attention to the signals it sends me. The only must in my life is a diet mostly organic and produce from local farmer’s market when possible. I have noticed a huge difference in mood and well being when eating a grain free diet with mostly vegetables that are organic and produced locally.
